Other fans need to back off Wall and let him enjoy season
By LARRY VAUGHT
Melvin Kale didn’t like the recent story about John Wall not being recruited by North Carolina and says NC coach Roy Williams never told him why.
Here’s the e-mail I got from Kale today:
“Come on Larry tell the truth about the recruiting or are you someone who knows absolutely nothing about College Recruitment and especially the recruitment of Wall by UNC. He would have loved to been at UNC or Duke but these are two schools that aren’t going to mess around with a Wall type of person, player, or whatever. Don’t write junk that isn’t true get your facts straight.”
When I e-mailed back that what happened with Wall was a fact, he noted that he responded that it was “all about the baggage Wall was trying to bring along with him.”
Of course, not sure just how factual that is or whether that is the spin Williams — who did seem to have some baggage of his own when he left Kansas if memory serves me right — put on it.
All I know is how Wall has been at Kentucky. Teammates respect him. He’s apparently been great academically. He’s been humble with the media. He’s been gracious with fans. And he now loves being at Kentucky.
I just don’t see any reason for fans from other schools to trash this young man who I now firmly believe will be the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft. Let him enjoy his time at Kentucky. He did nothing to you.
And to put the attention back on the game, here is what Wall had to say today about Saturday’s game with North Carolina in Rupp Arena.
On North Carolina …
“They are good, they are pretty good. They’ve got key big men that score in the post for them and they look to get the ball to them as much as they can. Everybody just plays from there. If you can’t stop their big men, then it is going to be tough. Coach Roy Williams is doing a great job of coaching them and preparing them for the season.”
On the pace of the game …
“I think it is going to get up and down but at the end, like the last four or eight minutes it is going to be about who can get a key defensive stop. That is what I think the game is going to come down to. It is about getting key stops and scoring when you need to at the end. “
On what mindset coach Calipari is taking into the game …
“He is just saying that we need to be prepared. This is our first test. This is probably going to be the most talented team we are going to play this year. They have big men and guards that can play. We are just working on everything we can to prepare for them. We are still working on our stuff and getting better every day at practice. We have to take time to see what they are doing and see what we have to do to try and stop them.”
On if coach Calipari thinks the team is “overrated” …
“I think he does still think we are overrated and we do too. That is something that is still motivating us. People say we are overrated; we’ve just got to keep working harder in the gym and in the classroom.”
On where the team stands entering the game …
“We are nowhere near to where we are supposed to be. We are doing fine and winning games but we are not where coach wants us to be, we know that too. We have to keep coming and working hard every day.”
On if Saturday is an opportunity to make a statement …
“It is just another basketball game, but on a bigger stage and a bigger level. It is going to be great competition for us to see where we are at and where we stand this season.”
On playing his home-state school North Carolina …
“I think I might have a little bit of an edge but I can’t let it overwhelm me and try get out of control and do stuff that I’m not supposed to do or try to do too much while I’m playing on Saturday. I’ve got to keep doing what I’ve been doing and get my teammates involved. If I have the opportunity to score that’s what I do, but I think if I get out of control it’s going to mess us up.”
On the game with UNC …
“I am looking forward to it a lot. I think it is going to be a great game. It is going to be our first time really being challenged this year, but a great team that is coached by a great coach in Roy Williams. They have a great freshman class that came in and a lot of people that came back from last year.”

Somebody needs to tell this guy that Duke did offer Wall a scholarship. They were one of his finalist.
Sounds a lot like sour grapes to me. But you’re right, better enjoy Wall while we can because he is gone in June and may not be the only one. Big test for the young Cats on Saturday, but we will all see how much further they need to go by January after the next 2 games.
Forgot that about Duke. You are right.
And agree with you Terry. Two losses would not stun me, but I know how much Cal wants to win these games. But I just want to see what might lie ahead and how this team responds win or lose
Tread lightly Larry. Your memory must be faulty. We cannot have you disparaging RoyBoy like that. He would NEVER be involved in, or have knowledge of, illegal activity within his program.
That being said, how can I get on Roy’s “graduation gift” list for my kids? I have a daughter getting ready to graduate college and twins that will be graduating from 8th grade. They could use one of his special congratulation “cards”.
He left Kansas with so much baggage, not even Southwest Airlines would fly it for free!!
HOLIER THAN THOU!!! I REST MY CASE!!!!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!
Larry,
How you been? Hadn’t been on the site in a few days. First, just wanted your readers to know that if they are wanting to buy tickets for the SEC Men’s Basketball tourney in Nashville (March 11-14), Georgia’s ticket office is now selling tickets. Only one I’ve found thus far.
As far as Wall goes, I have not heard or read anything but positive things about this kid. Sounds like he wants to be a great student just as much as he wants to dominate on the court. This is going to be a very exciting season watching him play with the other guys! We better all enjoy him while we can because he most definitely will not be back next year. I’m hoping we can keep Cousins, but I fear he will leave us too.
Thanks for the tidbit about the Georgia tickets. That could be huge for everyone Matt. I have not heard of tickets being for sell anywhere else either
And there’s no way Wall is back. I am not as sure about Cousins yet. But at least we know Orton will be back
My understanding is that Wall’s association with that AAU guy, Clifton, has more to do with UNC not recruiting him than anything. I read a quote just the other day where Clifton was bad-mouthing Roy Williams prior to Wall making a decision.
Actually, here’s a quote from Clifton from April 2009:
“I have no desire to talk to, to be involved with, to visit, to contemplate in any shape, form or fashion John Wall going to play for Roy Williams. Zero,” said Clifton, who runs the D-One sports program.
Larry, I agree with the guy – he did bring baggage – he had to get his clothes to UK someway. I’m in Atlanta this week, and I actually brought my baggage. Don’t that guy know NOTHING or maybe he just doesn’t travel out of North Carolina!!!! Seriously, I met him at the Women’s Clinic and he was well mannered, charming, fun, and smiling the entire guy. What a nice kid. I would be proud for him to be my son even if he couldn’t play basketball.
Thanks James. Had not seen that quote.
And thank you Sarah. Your wit always impresses me
LOL!! John Wall had a final list of UK, PUKE and Florida..I think that guy is a Puke Fan trying to stick his nose in something that does not Matter…Heck Nolan Smith for PUKE had to sit 2 games for a violation…Believe Me if ROY had known that the BEST FRESHMAN in the COUNTRY had not done anymore than HARRISON BARNES has done…An issue with Barnes is in the rumor mill…Than ROY would have been all over John Wall..Thank God he Missed on this Stud..Saturday all the UNC people will find out how bad BOY ROY messed up..Even though they will continue to question anything they can to sooth that pain they will feel in the old heart.I wonder If this guy has forgotten about CORY MAGGETTE?..Well I can understand how he would ..The Media has forgot him..Worse than that, the NCAA has forgotten him…GO BIG BLUE!!!
Larry,
Maybe it’s just me holding out hope that #11 stays for his Soph. year, but I don’t think he has already made up his mind to be one-and-done…plenty of things can happen between now and the time he has to announce his plans for the NBA, and from all that I hear, he is truly enjoying his college experience…it is quite possible (albeit not probable) that he stays another year (especially if he is “recruiting” CJ Leslie to join him)…he seems the type of kid that is adept at making his own decisions regardless of the “pressure” applied to him by outside sources (Clifton desperately wanted Wall at Duke). It would be nice if the Kentucky sportswriters wouldn’t be so quick to say that he will be gone after one year every time they write something about him…again, probably just holding out hope that we can see him in Blue and White for longer than just one year… hope this team does well this year so that at the end of the season they can earn themselves a “pantheon nickname” as well as a couple of banners…thanks.

David – it will be quite a coup for UK to be able to boast of the number one draft pick in the NBA for future recruiting efforts. John should indeed go after this year and become another success story for coach Cal and continue to put UK back in the lime-light for future top players. Remember that most of the kids today have never seen UK sniff a Final Four.
This will pay off for UK in spades.
You can hold out hope David, but barring an injury, just no way he’s back.
But as DMN noted, if Wall can be the No. 1 pick, it could still be huge for UK’s recruiting. I don’t think Cal will worry about that. He likes recruiting top talent that will go early in the draft. And to be honest, I like having this problem even though I know what you mean David
I’d love to see John Wall back at Kentucky next year, mainly because he seems to be enjoying the experience so much. He’s got the rest of his life to work (even if work is playing in the NBA).
That being said, I can’t argue with any young man going off to the NBA (especially one who is projected to go so high in the draft) since he can always come back and get his degree after his playing days are over. As I recall, his mom has some health issues that may have a bearing on his decision.
As for the sour grapes of the other fan bases, they should leave Mr. Wall alone!
Kale sounds like sour grapes.
Wall, Cousins, Patterson and maybe Bledsoe will be gone at year end. Don’t worry – Calipari will reload like Williams does.
I am with you Karen. NO way to wish him anything but success.
And I like your attitude Barry
