All-SEC teams show job Brooks has done
By LARRY VAUGHT
If you want to know what a solid coaching job Rich Brooks and his Kentucky staff did this year, just take a look at the Associated Press all-Southeastern Conference football teams.
There’s a reason Alabama is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country. The Crimson Tide had the league’s top offensive player — running back Mark Ingram — and top defensive player — linebacker Rolando McClain. Defensive tackle Terrence Cody was also a unanimous pick and four other Alabama players also made the first team.
Florida lost to Alabama in the SEC championship game. The Gators had six players on the first team.
Georgia and Mississippi both placed three players on the first team.
Kentucky? The Cats had one player — all-purpose player Randall Cobb — named to the first team.
On the second team, Kentucky landed defensive tackle Corey Peters, linebacker Sam Maxwell and all-purpose threat Derrick Locke.
That means UK did not have a single position player named to the first or second teams on offense and only two on defense.
That’s the talent gap Brooks and his staff face annually — and yet have still managed to put UK in four straight bowl games.
It also reminded me of conversations I had with NFL scouts earlier this season when UK played Alabama and Florida. I asked the scouts how many UK players would start for those two teams. At that time, all three went with cornerback Trevard Lindley, who had not injured his ankle yet. They felt Cobb and Locke would play as specialists, but not as position starters.
And that was it.
No Peters. No Micah Johnson at linebacker. No offensive linemen.
Going into the season, Lindley and Johnson were UK’s marquee players. Both had turned down a chance to go to the NFL to return for their senior seasons and improve their draft status. Instead, NFL scouts say both will likely go lower in the draft this year than they would have last year.
Lindley would need a “monster workout” to move back into the late second round or early third round where he was projected last year according to the scouts. NFL personnel question Johnson’s durability and ability to play in space against faster players.
“Both are going to be drafted and both could still be very good NFL players, but they are not as high on draft boards now as they were last year,” one scout said.
Maxwell and Peters have gone the other way.
One scout says Peters likely will be drafted higher than Myron Pryor, UK’s starting defensive tackle last year who is now with the New England Patriots. Maxwell has gone from a likely free agent to a second-day draft choice who intrigues a lot of NFL teams because of his ability to play pass defense.
Locke and Cobb? They are both terrific playmakers with size limitations. However, they are as versatile as any player in the conference and deserve the honors they received. And they are both back next year to lead the Kentucky offense.
So while it was easy to predict that Alabama’s Nick Saban would be SEC Coach of the Year, I think Brooks did every bit as well with his available talent as Saban did. Sure, UK could have beat South Carolina, Mississippi State and Tennessee. But it could have lost to Georgia, Auburn and Vanderbilt.
The talent level is better at UK, but things like all-SEC teams and recruiting rankings show the uphill battle Brooks and his staff still have to overcome.

Larry, it is very disappointing to read those comments about Lindley and Johnson. The scouts really said that? That sucks! Oh well, they may make a little less money at first, but it also gives them more of a chance to go to a good team. A few Superbowl rings on their fingers would probably ease that pain.
As far as Coach of the Year: A few breaks (and a few better personnel decisions at key times) and this team could have been 10 – 2 or 9 -3. THAT would have gotten Rich the C.O.Y. nod. Instead, the way this season played out, we actually had to listen to people saying we should leave the S.E.C. because it’s “too hard”. maybe everyone should just get onboard and enjoy being in the undisputed BEST conference in football, right now. A conference that has won 3 STRAIGHT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND PROBABLY WILL WIN A 4th. And might I add that, during that same 4 year period, this UK team has played well enough, in the toughest conference, to go to a bowl game EACH OF THOSE YEARS!!! Uncompetitive? I THINK NOT!!!!! Some of the top players WILL start coming, if this keeps up.
GO BIG BLUE!!!
Larry – Coach Brooks has done a wonderful job because he does things the right way and was given the chance to rebuild this program. Of course, rebuilding for UK is a little different than Ala of Fla. Coach Brooks and Phillips keep finding under the radar great players. The foundation is solid now and is better than it’s ever been. As far as NFL draft goes, our players may not be high draft picks but you still see more UK players on Sundays. As far as pulling out of SEC, moving away from SEC would be dumb financially. The SEC has 10 teams going to bowls. Bowl revenue is shared among all SEC schools. This revenue sharing, along with the ESPN TV deal, is going to bring enourmous sums of revenue to SEC schools, UK included. UK is now on the radar to better recruits and the future is bright. GO CATS!!
Larry,
This is what I have been saying all year. The reason UK struggles is the level and depth of talent in the SEC. That said the talent we have has gotten way better under Coach Brooks. He and the staff have done an excellent job. If UK played in the ACC or Big East we would be one of the top teams in the conference. Heck we were one win away from being 2nd in the SEC East. As I have always said if fans are unhappy with Brooks’ recruiting they are not really studying college FB. Although some of the calls in late games(Tenn) are the Coaches responsibility he has done a great job at keeping instate talent and getting good players from Ga. Ohio and the likes. He still get an A but a couple different results(Tenn) would make it an A Plus. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR GO HOME
What Brooks and his staff have done this season, with the injurys and this schedule, Hs been unbelievable IMO..Heck this team is only 3 or 4 plays from being 10-2..and to do that with the ups and downs in this league..WOW!!…I think Brooks is the SEC coach of the year IMO..I know we are in the pile with the rest of those other teams record wise, But to do what he has done with all the set backs, that to me is worthy of the award…GO BROOKS!!!GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
